Stump grinding or stump removal... which is better?

Although cutting down a tree may seem like a major project, it’s actually more straightforward than removing a stump.

Stump removal isn’t easy which is why many people have old stumps in their gardens. But it’s certainly possible with the right equipment and expertise. Stump removal is a lot more involved, which is why it’s not usually included in the cost of tree removal.

People often question whether stump grinding or stump removal is better. Stump grinding is much less intensive and more efficient than stump removal. Bear in mind however that it does leave the tree’s roots behind.

Does stump grinding kill roots?

Yes it does. Once the stump is removed the roots cannot grow because roots need nutrients to grow. With no leaves to supply nutrients to the roots, a stump cannot grow.

And whilst these do rot down over time, it is a very slow process which can take around 10 years depending on their size.

How long does it take?

Depending on the size and density of wood, grinding down a stump can take anywhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours.

For instance, softer woods like conifers and willow can be ground faster than harder woods like oak and beech.
